Jailed Gambino captain pleads for early release due to coronavirus

An alleged mobster and a former New York City police officer are looking to be released from federal prison due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Federal court proceedings are being done remotely due to COVID-19, and News 12 listened in on two separate court conferences before a federal judge.
The first was for Valerie Cincinelli, a 35-year-old ex-New York City police officer from Oceanside. She's charged with murder-for-hire and obstruction of justice for allegedly plotting to kill her ex-husband and her boyfriend's teenage daughter.
Since her arrest last year, Cincinelli has maintained her innocence. She is being held without bail.
Her lawyer, James Kousouros, made a motion to a federal judge to release Cincinelli on bail pending her trial. He says there's additional text message evidence that proves her innocence, and that she's at risk of contracting COVID-19.
"She was designated to the do the laundry for incoming inmates and other inmates at the facility," says Kousouros. "So she was placed in a high-risk situation with only gloves, no mask, so she actually is, and has been put, in a position where she could contract the virus."
The government argued that the "defendant has failed to identify any qualifying change in circumstances; has failed to demonstrate a specific vulnerability to illness related to COVID-19."
The judge postponed a decision until Monday.
The second defendant was John Ambrosio, of Huntington. He's the alleged captain in the Gambino organized crime family. He's 76 years old and serving 51 months for racketeering.
The government argued, "The litany of medical conditions he cites in his motion are wholly uncorroborated. They should be viewed with extreme skepticism given his history and characteristics."
The judge said "one letter from a doctor is not going to make any in-roads" - and that she would need to see more medical records.
For now, both defendants remain behind bars.

Boy, oh boy.
Bonanno family soldier Frank "Frankie Boy" Salerno was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison for collecting mob loansharking and gambling debts.
U.S. District Court Judge Sandra J. Feuerstein imposed the federal jail term on Salerno, who collected the cash on behalf of his co-defendant John "Johnny Boy" Ambrosio — an acting captain in the Gambino family, prosecutors said.
Salerno, 43, of Queens, and Ambrosio were two of seven local Mafiosi busted in a federal sweep that ended with convictions for each and every one.
Ambrosio, 74, of Huntington, L.I., was sentenced last week to 51 months in prison on the same racketeering conspiracy charge as Salerno.
According to prosecutors, Salerno made his collections between 2014-17. A third conspirator, in an conversation with an undercover agent, outed himself and Salerno as organized crime figures.
Salerno “has got that thing,” said Gambino associate Anthony Saladino — pointing to a button on his shirt, indicating Frankie Boy’s Mafia legitimacy.
Saladino, 67, of Glen Cove, L.I., was sentenced to 63 months on the same day as Ambrosio.
The sentences “demonstrate that the shirt button of a ‘made man’ is no match for a badge,” said William Sweeney, FBI assistant director-in-charge of the New York office.

An aging Long Island Gambino crime-family captain is facing the rest of his life in prison for running a gambling and loan-sharking operation, officials said Thursday.
John “Johnny Boy” Ambrosio, 74, could get up to 20 years after pleading guilty to racketeering in Central Islip federal court.
From 2014 to 2017, he oversaw a scheme with six other Gambino and Bonanno goodfellas that included poker games, sports betting and gaming machines.
The Huntington wiseguy was arrested along with associates Thomas Anzalone, Alessandro “Sandro” Damelio and reputed Bonanno soldier Frank “Frankie Boy” Salerno.
During a search, officials found letters addressed to Ambrosio from the late Gambino “Teflon Don” John Gotti Sr.
Ambrosio’s lawyer did not return requests for comment.

Feds bust Gambino and Bonanno mobsters on Long Island

A bunch of Long Island mobsters were busted Tuesday on a host of criminal charges including loan sharking, drug dealing and running illegal casinos, authorities said.
Federal prosecutors unveiled a 13-count indictment charging six members and associates of the Gambino organized crime family, and a member of the Bonanno organized crime family with racketeering conspiracy, illegal gambling and obstruction of justice.
The charges against the seven men include alleged criminal activity on Long Island and in Brooklyn that took place between January 2014 and December 2017, officials said.
The gambling offenses included illegal poker games, electronic gaming machines and internet sports betting.
In one intercepted call, one of the suspects, John "Johnny Boy" Ambrosio, an acting captain in the Gambino family, was caught on tape telling someone there was no need to travel to a casino — "you can play right here" and "save gas money."
Arrested along with Ambrosio were Frank "Frankie Boy" Salerno, a soldier in the Bonanno family, Thomas Anzaone, Alessandro "Sandro" Damelio, Joseph Durso, Anthony Rodolico and Anthony Saladino, associates of the Gambino family, who were busted Tuesday.
They were scheduled to be arraigned before United States Magistrate Judge Gary Brown in federal court in Central Islip.
"The arrests in this case prove organized crime families haven't gone away, and continue to plague our communities with their general disregard for anything other than their own greed," said FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney.
Officials said several of the suspects distributed a variety of narcotics including cocaine, marijuana and Xanax. Authorities said Saladino and Salerno engaged in the distribution of wholesale quantities of cocaine, including 12 separate sales to an undercover cop totaling more than half a kilogram.
