New England mob associate sentenced in RI

A New England mob associate was sentenced on Monday to 2 1/2 years in prison for his role in the shakedown of Providence-area strip clubs where he worked as a bookkeeper.
Thomas Iafrate, 70, of Johnston, is the first defendant to be punished in the case, which authorities say involves several mafia figures and generated at least $2 million in ill-gotten gains.
Iafrate pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and admitted to being a mob associate in July. He must report to federal prison on Jan. 3, federal prosecutors said.
Iafrate's punishment was imposed the same day a federal judge denied bail for a second time for alleged ex-New England mob boss Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio, 84.
Prosecutors say Iafrate collected protection payments for Manocchio while working as a bookkeeper for Richard and Nancy Shappy, who own the Cadillac Lounge, Satin Doll and Northeast Sales.
Manocchio and six others charged in the case have pleaded not guilty.
Iafrate and Manocchio were arrested in January during a nationwide sweep of alleged mafia figures and associates. In March, federal officials also charged Richard Bonafiglia, 57, and Theodore Cardillo, 67. Prosecutors say Bonafiglia and Cardillo kept Manocchio informed of the goings-on at the Cadillac Lounge, where they worked as a bouncer and manager, respectively.
Another four people were indicted in September, including alleged Rhode Island crime boss Edward "Eddy" Lato, 64, and his alleged soldier Alfred "Chippy" Scivola, 70. Prosecutors say Lato and Scivola continued to extort area strip clubs even after Manocchio was arrested. Lato and Scivola also face charges in state court. Prosecutors allege they participated in $400,000 illegal sports betting scheme.
