Joe Di Maulo, an associate of the Rizzuto crime family, was assassinated at his opulent home north of Montreal in the latest attack on the crumbling crime empire.
Di Maulo, 72, got two bullets to the head on Sunday evening in Blainville, sources told QMI Agency.
Di Maulo, who was from Calbria in southern Italy, was a Rizzuto adviser and was also the brother-in-law of Raynald Desjardins, one of the few non-Italians to crack the crime family's inner circle.
The murder comes just a few weeks after Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto's return to Canada after serving a prison sentence in the U.S. for his part in a 1981 mob triple-murder.
Di Maulo had apparently switched over to the Rizzuto clan after previous associations with the Cotroni and Violi organizations that the Rizzutos eliminated in the 1980s.
The victim was accused in another triple murder in 1971, but the verdict was overtured on appeal.
Di Maulo was seen at the December 2009 funeral of Nick Rizzuto Jr., Vito's son who was gunned down in west-end Montreal.
Vito Rizzuto has also lost his father, Nick Rizzuto Sr., to an assassination in November 2010.
