Colombo street boss hopes to charm federal judge for lenient sentence

A Mafia boss may have a few tricks up his sleeve as he heads to the Big House.
Relatives of Andrew “Mush’’ Russo, a Colombo crime-family street boss, recently wrote to a Brooklyn federal judge seeking leniency as he heads to prison for a charge of “racketeering gambling conspiracy,” noting that, among other things, he’s a beloved amateur magician who entertains at family parties.
“Whether it was when he was doing magic tricks or playing chess, telling jokes or talking about our family history, he always had our full attention,” Russo’s grandniece, Melissa Giordano-Domazetovski, said in one letter.
Russo’s niece and nephew added, in another: “He always made us laugh and. . . would entertain us with tricks for hours.”
The 78-year-old mobster — who counts James Caan as a friend and is godfather to the actor’s son, Scott — is facing 33 to 41 months behind bars. He is set to be sentenced in the next few weeks.
