Leaked NATO Documents Accuse Kosovo PM of Mafia Links
Western powers backing Kosovo's government allegedly considered its prime minister, Hashim Thaci, as one of the country's "biggest fish" in organized crime, according to a report in Britain's "The Guardian" newspaper.The newspaper cites leaked NATO military documents from Kosovo in the report. It said the documents, dating from around 2004, also show a close Thaci ally -- Xhavit Haliti -- had links to the Albanian mafia.
The paper quotes a Kosovo government spokesman as dismissing the allegations in the leaked documents.
Last month, Thaci was accused of links to organized crime in a report prepared for the Council of Europe.
The report by Dick Marty, a Swiss senator, said Thaci ran an organized crime ring during and after the Kosovo Albanian guerrilla war against Serbia in the late 1990s.
Marty said Thaci's group killed opponents and trafficked in drugs and organs taken from murdered Serbs.
The Kosovo government rejected that report as baseless and "slanderous."
