'Vinny Gorgeous' was a killer who 'ruthlessly' rose through Bonanno ranks: feds
Bonanno crime family big Vincent "Vinny Gorgeous" Basciano is a killer who "ruthlessly" climbed the mob ladder in an effort to gain control, federal prosecutors told a Brooklyn jury today during closing arguments.
Basciano, who faces the death penalty if convicted of ordering a hit on associate Randy Pizzolo, ordered the murder because he had been "disrespected," Assistant Federal Prosecutor Stephen Frank said.
"You need to understand how [Basciano] ruthlessly rose to the top of this criminal enterprise," Frank said.
Basciano shook his head as Frank addressed the jury.
Frank also said Basciano was "a powerful captain with his eye on the top."
Basciano is on trial on capital-murder and racketeering charges.
The case relies heavily on conversations between Basciano and mob boss Big Joey Massino, who secretly wore a wire as a government informant.
Massino was the highest-ranking mobster in New York history to ever testify against someone in the same crime family.
During the trial, it was revealed that Basciano, 51, had a man crush on late mob boss John Gotti, according to recordings played for the jury.
"You know what? He did it the way he wanted, and he died the way he wanted," Basciano said on the recording, referring to the "Dapper Don," his role model in crime and style.
