Gambino family associate hit with child molestation charges

A reputed Gambino crime family associate is facing sex-crime charges for allegedly molesting an underage girl over a period of five years, The Post has learned.
Robert Wehnert has been charged with felony first- degree sexual abuse of a child less than 11 years old, court papers show.
The victim, the daughter of a friend of his, was allegedly fondled and kissed by the reputed mobster at his home from January 2006 to November 2011.
Queens Criminal Court Judge Suzanne Melendez released him on $25,000 bail.
Wehnert — whose nickname is “Bobby Werner” — is a longtime member of a mob crew headed by Gambino captain Bartolomeo Vernace, who also sits on the crime family’s ruling panel, Brooklyn federal prosecutors said.
At the time of his arrest last month, Wehnert was out on bail and awaiting trial on unrelated racketeering and gambling charges in federal court.
His attorney, Joseph Corozzo, said in a letter filed with the judge yesterday that Wehnert “strongly disputes the facts underlying the Queens charges and maintains his innocence.”
