Whitey Bulger's girlfriend sentenced to eight years in prison
The girlfriend of notorious mobster James "Whitey" Bulger was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison for helping her fugitive companion evade the law for 16 years.
Catherine Greig, 60, had struck a deal with prosecutors and entered guilty pleas on charges of conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud.
Greig initially pleaded not guilty shortly after she and Bulger were captured at their longtime hideout in Santa Monica, Calif., last June, but her lawyers arranged the change in plea earlier this week.
By pleading guilty, Greig will avoid going to trial and will not be forced to testify against 82-year-old Bulger, who is accused of committing 19 murders in Boston dating back to the 1970s.
The pair went on the lam in 1994 after Bulger -- who inspired the Boston-based crime movie "The Departed" -- discovered he was to be arrested on racketeering charges.
