Bronx firefighter among eight busted in alleged $2M a year mob crime ring

A Bronx firefighter has been busted in an alleged $2 million-a-year, mob-run gambling and money laundering ring.
Thomas McMahon, of the FDNY’s Ladder 38 in Belmont, was one of eight men arrested and indicted by Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson, charged with running sports betting ring tied to the Genovese crime family.
McMahon, 33, was arraigned in Bronx Criminal court yesterday, along with reputed mob associates Joseph Sarcinella, 77, Frank Mastracchio, 56, Dominick Totino, 44, Dominick Pietranico, 81, Bruno Travositino, 81, and John D’Ambrosio, 54.
Sarcinella — a longtime reputed Genovese mobster who in 2002 pleaded guilty to running a $10 million illegal betting operation — was the ringleader of the Bronx betting business, which he ran out of a Mace Avenue social club and two gambling wire rooms, prosecutors said.
Mastrachhio, who lives on City Island near McMahon, allegedly managed the wire rooms.
McMahon took bets, created accounts and worked as a runner, picking up money and dispersing winnings for the ring, the DA alleged.
“McMahon is close with Mastracchio, he calls him his ‘uncle,’’’ a source told The Post.
Prosecutors said the gambling ring collected more than $2 million between December 2009 and June 23, 2011.
Sources said the ring, which had been under surveillance by the NYPD, took bets on professional sports, including NHL, NFL and NBA games.
McMahon was charged with Enterprise Corruption and multiple counts of promoting gambling and conspiracy. He faces up to 25 years in the slammer if convicted.
In the wake of his arrest, McMahon — who has been with the FDNY for seven years — was suspended without pay for 30 days.
He will be put on administrative duty while the case makes its way through the courts.
An FDNY spokesman declined comment on McMahon’s arrest.
McMahon couldn’t be reached.
And an older man answering the door at the address listed for McMahon and his parents insisted he didn’t know the firefighter.
